Plastic chairs to sit on, tables littered with soju bottles, and a cackling ajumma serving you food that’s still half-alive – these are the delights of the pojangmacha, ramshackle seafood dens that congregate on many a Korean street. They’re usually distinguishable by their orange, tent-like covering; one good area to find them in Seoul is outside exits three to six of Jongno 3-ga subway station. Just watch out for the octopus tentacles – every year, people die of suffocation when their still-wriggling prey makes a last bid for freedom.

East Midlands

Lined with cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops, flower stalls and newspaper kiosks, it’s at the heart of Barcelona’s life and self-image. At the bottom of the Ramblas is the waterfront, whose spruced-up harbour area is known as Port Vell (Old Port). Walking east from here takes you past the aquarium and marina, through the old fishing and restaurant quarter of Barceloneta, past the Parc de la Ciutadella and out along the promenade to the cafés and restaurants of the Port Olímpic.

Private golf courses have varying standards for allowing non-members to play (check their websites) and steeper fees – over $100 a person for the more elite courses. While state parks and state monuments, administered by individual states, preserve sites of more limited, local significance, many are explicitly intended for recreational use, and thus hold better campgrounds than their federal equivalents. Ridesharing – Uber is available in Lisbon but it’s not much cheaper than the taxis. Bolt and FreeNow are two other ridesharing apps that are usually cheaper than Uber, but I’d still skip ridesharing altogether if you’re on a budget. Cook your own meals – Restaurants are affordable here, but eating out all the time can still be costly.

Spring and summer are peak seasons in Berlin (especially May to September). The whole city comes alive as people get out to enjoy temperatures in the 30s°C (high 80s°F). This shuttles every 30min between the two terminals — look for the transfer counter in your transit lounge. Given its overwhelming busyness, its fair to say that you might only need a day or two in Mumbai. Chandigarh is probably the only Indian city where you’ll notice traffic rules actually being followed, roundabouts that aren’t terrifying, and urban planning that doesn’t feel like it was an afterthought. Designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in the 1950s, this city was meant to be India’s answer to modernity — and it kind of nailed it. Think wide boulevards, tree-lined avenues, and neighbourhoods called «sectors» that are basically mini-towns in themselves. From iconic architectural sites and eclectic food scenes to lush gardens and rooftop bars that serve up Himalayan sunsets with a side of cocktails — Chandigarh is having a low-key glow-up, and you’ll want in. Lake Como, which is referred to as Lago di Como, is the third-largest lake in Italy and is very scenic. It is shaped uniquely like an upside-down Y and is surrounded by attractive destinations such as Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio around it.

A banging good time

Most of the outer wall and its 96 towers are still standing; access is restricted on some of the restored sections, though elsewhere there’s the chance to scramble along the crumbling edifice. As there are still plenty of run-down slums in this area, it’s best avoided at night (especially Topkapı). Moderately alternative city-centre weekend-long festival, usually held at Santralistanbul, with plenty of DJ-led dance sets and performances from international bands such as Röyksopp and Klaxons, plus assorted home-grown acts.

Evening jams lasting the entire night into the morning rush hours are rare but not unheard of. You will have to compete for the right-of-way with seasoned drivers who know the tangle of the streets inside out and will not think twice before cutting you off at the first opportunity. One bright spot is the dearth of the large 18-wheeler trucks on Moscow roads.

How to find your way around Berlin

Wisps of sulphurous smoke still drift from smaller cones on the slopes of this ancient volcano, which last erupted in 2000. Given the scenery, it’s no surprise that this is one of Bali’s most popular tourist destinations. Most only visit on a day trip but stay overnight in either lakeside Toya Bungkah or Kedisan and hike to the summit to experience the magic of the scenery at sunrise. The other routes of the Trans-Siberian Railway, between Moscow and China, are more popular among tourists. There are two weekly trains to/from Beijing, the Trans-Mongolian (Train #4) via Ulaanbaatar and the Trans-Manchurian (Vostok/Train #20) via Manchuria. Both journeys take six nights but the ride via Mongolia offers more scenery.
